Walks book updates
Updates to our book "Walks around Melbourne"
Walk 1
The footpath across the field at Pool Farm was not back in place in September 2009 after ploughing (reported).
Walk 4
We are grateful to Brian Smith for pointing out a problem with this walk where just beyond Hills Cottage, Stanton by Bridge, the route is not very clear. We think that this is due to re-fencing work and the possible removal of a sign.
The footpath stile referred to in the text can be found in the fence on the right hand side of the track leading up to some new stables (see below).
SDDC have added the direction marker to the post to make the route clearer.
13/10/09 - Footpath signs are missing at the end of the Swarkestone Causeway and opposite Sir Francis Burdett House on Derby Road, Melbourne after Breach Lane.
The problems have been reported.

Walk 6 - Revision to Swarkestone Circular pp.18/20
1. Due to access problems along the road by Swarkestone Sailing Lake we have had to make alterations to the route described.
After the Crewe and Harpur PH cross the bridge and walk along the narrow causeway for 300 metres (keeping an eye out for the traffic) until you reach a footpath sign and gate. The path, which can be muddy, heads across stiles and fields to a stream that runs towards the causeway. The route continues behind the Sailing Club (please do not enter it).
This route is not suitable for walking with children because of traffic on the causeway. Alternatively catch an Arriva bus from the pub to Stanton by Bridge and pick up the track to Waterworks House as described on p. 20.
John Sheppard has produced a revised map which can be found here (you may need to click on it to enlarge).
2. March 2009 - walker Nigel Webster has pointed out that the route to Stanton by Bridge from the back of the Sailing Club has been affected by the construction of wired paddock areas for horses.
The route is still walkable but a detachable gap in the electric fence will be encountered (see below). The rest of the routes is as written. We will be discussing this new situation with the SDDC Footpaths Officer.
Update May 2009
Problems here have been investigated by the footpaths officer for SDDC.
He has replaced some of the confusing direction markers and has recommended that a step over gap is positioned at the Swarkestone end to replace the removable electric fence (above).
Walk 8
October 2009 - The path from Ingleby to Ingleby Toft (near the John Thompson) has been ploughed up It has been reported. Still not back in (December 2009).
Walk 9
There are some problems on the section directly after Smisby Village. These include a broken sign, poorly maintained path and a heavy crop in the field that our route passes across. Reported to Derbys CC - October 2009.
